What's that we hear?

What's that we hear
coming down the hall?
Sounds six feet wide
and ten feet tall
a giant monster on the prowl
in search of food
it starts to growl
it's creeping slowly
to our room
and we know
that we're all doomed
our eyes are wide
our hearts beat fast
afraid this breath
may be our last
But we can't run
we just sit frozen
knowing we're the ones it's chosen
alas, there's no escape
it's certain
when it finds us
then it's curtains
It will grab us in its' claws
then open up its' giant jaws
and one by one
we'll all be munched
giving new meaning to
" school lunch"
So at our desks
we sit and wait
prepared to meet our awful fate
we hear the doorknob slowly turning
minds are racing
stomachs churning
Then we see it and we SCREAM!
for this beast that we have dreamed
this ghastly child-chomping creature
has turned out to be
our teacher

I Touched a Star

when I was just a tiny boy
I had a dream that brought me joy
to reach my hands up high
straight through the trees and clouds and sky
and I would keep on going
arms and fingers growing
thinner, longer, higher, stronger
up beyond the atmosphere
someplace way up - way out there
to where no man can breathe
no bird can soar
then I reach just a little more
on tippiest of tiptoes
now I barely touch the floor
my hands they pass the moon
and very soon the planets all go by
and I avoid the asteroids that zoom around the sky
and I am reaching up to places that my eyes can’t even see
past the deepest, darkest, blackest place that you could ever be
and then just when I start to think I’ve strayed a bit too far
I reach up just a little further -
and then - my friends
I touch a Star...!
...my arms shoot back to earth
they’re followed closely by my hands
they snap me wide awake just like two giant rubber bands
amazed!- I am surprised
to find my hands and arms are normal sized
I want to tell my Mom and Dad
I want to yell out “Hey you guys!”
but then
I stop
and realize
I touched a Star
and surely that’s a secret I must keep
so I shut my eyes
and I fall back
fast asleep

Sugar Mountain

It was Halloween, 1976
eleven years old and looking for kicks
I hatched a plan
so smooth and slick
a genius scheme
a wicked trick
to get more treats
more sweets
for me and me alone to eat
I rubbed my hands
and kicked my feet
and laughed "AHAHAHA!
I'll show them who's the
candy-king of this street!"
So
that night I went from door to door
and they filled my bag with treats galore
but when I'd been to every one
I wasn't through
I wasn't done
Oh no, the fun
had just begun!
I hid behind a neighbor's tree
and making sure no-one could see
I changed my costume
quick as I could
from Dracula
To Robin Hood
I stashed my cape and fangs and then
I went around the block again!
and with my new disguise
the neighbors never realized
that I was wise
that I'd come back
my candy sack
grew twice in size!
but that, of course
was not enough
I wanted that bag overstuffed
I had to have the most
so that tomorrow I could boast
and so I changed my costume once again
this time into a ghost
then once again
I made the rounds
around the block
around the town
my candy bag weighed fifty pounds
full to the top
with mounds and mounds
of Butterfingers, BlowPops, Baby Ruth, and Pop Rocks, wax lips
Dum-Dums, Almond Joys and bubble gum, Smarties and Snickers and Squirrel Nut Zippers, Maryjanes, M&Ms (plain and peanut)
oh man, oh man
you shoulda seen it!
I ran straight home and up the stairs
trailing candy everywhere
but I had tons - I didn't care
I bolted fast into my room
and closed the door tight like a tomb
I dumped my booty on the bed
a sugar mountain - high as my head
I couldn't wait to eat it up
I ate a peanut butter cup
and then I downed
three packs of licorice
gummy bears and swedish fish
I wish I'd stopped
but I kept going
wrappers flying - belly growing
never stopping - never slowing
knowing that I would regret it
" I should stop
but Ah, forget it"
I ate and ate and ate and ate
til after eight
til it got late
I couldn't stop - it was my fate
until at last I swallowed whole
the last lint covered Tootsie Roll
Ah,yes it took a force of will
to eat right through that candy hill
I must have had ten times my fill

When I think back -oooh
It makes me ill
I think I'm gonna spill
I better go - this won't be nice
but please, my friend, take this advice
and I don't have time to say it twice
this year after Trick or Treating
take your time when candy eating
and don't be greedy - don't play tricks
you'll only end up getting sick
that's my advice - I hope you use it
I'd better go...
...I'm gonna lose it!
